Sunset in the ancient city of Assos
Assos was one of the cities where Aristotle lived and taught in the fourth century BCE. If sunset falls within visiting hours, photograph the sea and evening light from the visitor path near Athena's Temple. Add a question the view inspires to your memory; the visible ruins have not been identified as his classroom.
Story and sources →Cross the Dardanelles on the longest suspension bridge in the world
Opened in 2022 between Gelibolu and Lapseki, the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge has a main span of 2,023 metres, the longest anywhere, with towers painted the red and white of the flag. It replaced a ferry that took an hour. Drive across with the strait below you — and photograph it from the shore.

Climb the heart-shaped walls of Kilitbahir
Mehmed II built Kilitbahir in 1463 on the narrowest point of the Dardanelles, facing its twin across the water, so the two forts could close the strait between them: the name means "lock of the sea". The inner keep is shaped like a clover leaf. Climb to the top of the tower — and photograph it.
Join the harvest at the Bozcaada Grape Harvest Festival (September)
Ride the tractor with the vineyard workers to pick grapes, and join the traditional harvest ceremony and free concerts — and photograph it.

Eat grilled Gelibolu sardines beside the old harbour
Gelibolu sardalyası is a registered product: fat sardines from the strait, salted in the town's own way or simply grilled on the quay in summer. The harbour is a round Byzantine basin with the Piri Reis tower on its edge. Eat them with your fingers — and photograph it.
Walk the restored bastions of Seddülbahir at the tip of the peninsula
The 1659 fortress at the very mouth of the Dardanelles was shelled flat by the British fleet in 1915 and left in ruins for a century; its walls and towers have now been rebuilt stone by stone. From the ramparts you see both the Aegean and the strait. Stand on the seaward wall — and photograph it.
See the map of America in Piri Reis's home town
The Ottoman admiral who drew the 1513 world map with the coast of South America on it was born in Gelibolu, and the Byzantine tower on the harbour holds a small museum of his charts and the Kitab-ı Bahriye. Find the map — and photograph it.
Visit the two graves at Bolayır
On the ridge where the peninsula is narrowest lie Süleyman Paşa, who led the first Ottoman crossing into Europe in 1354, and beside him the poet Namık Kemal, who asked to be buried next to him and was, in 1888. The Marmara is on one side of the ridge and Saros on the other. Stand between the two tombs — and photograph it.
Step into the largest Mevlevi lodge outside Konya
Gelibolu's Mevlevihane, built around 1620, was one of the biggest dervish lodges in the empire, with a whirling hall that seated hundreds. It was abandoned, used as a barracks and restored in 2005; the semahane and its galleries are open. Stand in the middle of the floor — and photograph it.
