Discover the mud behind La Pintada’s hat patterns

La Pintada · La Pintada · Panama

In La Pintada’s sombrero pintao tradition, some plant fibers are first dyed reddish with chisná leaves, then darkened to black in swamp mud. The black fibers become patterns in the hat. If you find a local artisan or seller, ask about the technique; study a woven pattern and photograph it with permission.
