Moscow
Lie back under the ceiling at Mayakovskaya
Stainless steel arches and thirty-five mosaics set into the ceiling, all of them showing the sky, so you have to tip your head right back to see any of them. It is thirty-three metres down and served as a bomb shelter in 1941, when Stalin gave a speech on the platform. Photograph one mosaic from directly underneath.
Eat the GUM ice cream in the cold
The same plombir, the same paper wrapper and the same counter since 1954, sold by weight from a cart inside the arcade. People queue for it in February, which tells you more about the city than the ice cream does. Photograph the wrapper before it goes soft.
Visit St Basils Cathedral
From outside it reads as one building; inside there are nine separate chapels linked by narrow corridors, and no great hall at all. Every dome has a different pattern, and the colours were added centuries later. Photograph a corridor.
