Cities and places

Bucharest

  1. History

Find the balcony where the speech stopped

On 21 December 1989 the crowd in this square began to boo mid-speech, the live broadcast cut out, and the regime had four days left. The balcony is still there on the old Central Committee building. Photograph it.

  2. Culture & art

Walk under the glass roof of Macca-Vilacrosse

A forked arcade from the 1890s with a yellow glass roof, built when Bucharest was calling itself little Paris. The light inside is the colour of the glass all day. Photograph the roof from below.

  3. History

Stand in front of the Palace of the Parliament

The heaviest building on earth and the second largest administrative one after the Pentagon. A fifth of the old city was demolished to clear the ground for it, and it was still unfinished when the man who ordered it was shot. Photograph the whole façade if you can fit it.
